BHUBANESWAR: At least six Kolkata-bound flights had to divert midair and make emergency landing at Biju Patnaik International Airport here on Monday due to inclement weather in the West Bengal capital.
The flights left for Kolkata after the air traffic control gave landing permission.
“There was a delay of around three hours. Only one flight had to offload the passengers otherwise passengers of remaining five flights remained on board,” said acting airport director Yudhisthir Sahu.
All the flights landed safely at the airport in quick succession between 9.30 to 10.30am. The flights were coming from Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Bengaluru and New Delhi.
Sahu said the due to heavy rains, the Kolkata ATC didn’t give landing permission.
“There was zero visibility on the runway forcing the pilots to divert towards the nearest airport,” he added.
While Indigo flights were coming from Hyderabad, Guwahati and New Delhi, the Air India flight had taken off from Bengaluru. Another flight of GoAir was coming from Ahmedabad.
Airport sources said the situation had no impact on the operations of other scheduled flights.
“The aircraft were given parking bay. Although the weather condition here was cloudy, there was no rain and runway visibility was also conducive for landing,” said an airport officer.
In September, 2016, the Airport Authority of India gave the city airport permission for round-the-clock operations in view of several flights from neighbouring airports asking for diversion during inclement weather and night landing due to emergency situations.
Accordingly, the airport here augmented its ATC, communication, terminal building and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
In July Air India’s Delhi-bound flight AI 078 had to deplane the passengers minutes before takeoff from here after technical snag was detected.
On May 22, Air India Mumbai-Bhubaneswar flight with155 passengers on board made an emergency landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport after smoke was detected in the cockpit.
