The blaze ripped out of a loading truck transporting cargo onto an American Airlines jet at Hong Kong international airport.
Dramatic video from inside the terminal shows passengers rushing to the window to see the fire engulfing the cargo on the truck.
One airport worker was injured in the blaze which broke out right next to the Boeing 777 jet at 5.30pm local time (9.30am UK).
A spokesman for American Airlines has confirmed the fire was caused by a “mechanical issue” on the truck, and the flight to Los Angeles has been cancelled.
The spokesman said: “An external piece of loading equipment had a mechanical issue and caught fire while preparing to put cargo in the hold of American Airlines flight 192 from Hong Kong (HKG) to Los Angeles (LAX).
“As a result, a pallet on the loading equipment containing non-hazardous goods also caught fire.
“Boarding had not yet started when this occurred and no passengers or crew were injured.
“The operator of loading equipment is being looked after by medical professionals with non-life threatening injuries. Flight AA192 has been cancelled and customers have been rebooked on other flights.”It is reported the fire damaged the cargo door of the plane.
Pictures from after the fire was put out showed the cargo had been reduced to blackened wreckage.
Hong Kong airport is the eighth busiest airport in the world – one behind London Heathrow – with 70 million passengers a year.
