VERNON, TEXAS – An airplane crash early Sunday afternoon claimed the life of at least one person.
The accident happened in an open field a few miles south west of Wilbarger County Airport south of the intersection of County Roads 103N and 118S.
No other information was available Sunday afternoon.
The identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Wilbarger County Sheriff Office, and the Wilbarger County Management remained on the scene following the accident to secure the scene pending arrival of investigators from the FAA.
The plane apparently caught fire at the time of the crash and was consumed by the flames.
Grass around the accident also caught fire. Members of the Vernon Fire Department extinguished the flames.
